Nepenthes Rafflesiana Cultivation
Nepenthes Rafflesiana
is a beautiful lowland plant.
Cultivating Ease -
Very Easy Type
- This plant is a lowland, but can tolerate very
cool temperatures as well. Temperature - Keeping it warm at all times is advisable,
although it can tolerate temperatures as low as 35 degrees (non-frost) at night for weeks
at a time. Even though it can tolerate cold temperatures, it should be kept between 75 and
95 degrees farenheit for optimum growth. It grows well as an intermediate. Humidity - This plant needs humidity above 70%. Light - Shaded conditions to full direct (diffused)
sunlight. It grows very well in a large chamber under lights. Moisture - Keep the plant moist to wet. Soil - Long Fiber Sphagnum Size - The plant can grow to a significant length. Even
small tissue culture plants can grow very fast. It is an candidate for larger grow
chambers (4'x4'x8') under lights, but pruning every 6 months to a year will eventually be
required. Details: Rafflesiana produces Nepenthes characteristic
pitchers, having a high toothed peristome and frilly wings. A very nice first plant. Propagation - Plants grown from seed mature relatively
fast. Small tissue culture plants also grow rapidly. Rooted cuttings are very easy to
take. Forms - Contrary to Dansers 1928 monograph, rafflesiana
has an extraordinary amount of variability. To Dansers
credit, many of these have only recently been described. Some forms once known are
probably gone from cultivation. "Typical" - The
typical form can occasionally produce frilled winged tendrils. "Squat Red" -
Produces small squat pitchers, with the entire plant and pitchers being colored a dark
pink to blood red color. "White" -
Produces whitish green pitchers with red flecking. "Singapore Giant"
- This and a few other giant forms can produce pitchers rivaling that of N. rajah. "Elongata" -
This plant produced greenish leaves and pitchers that can be 2 to 3 times as long as the
typical variety. "Elegance" - A
type of elongata that is beautifully colored. "Alata" -
Consistently produces frilled winged tendrils.
