Nepenthes Murudensis Cultivation

Nepenthes murudensis is an ultrahighland mountain plant, being found near the summits of Mt. Murud in Borneo.

Cultivating Ease - Challenge. Much easier for growers who live where the nighttime temperatures fall into the 50's in the summer.

Type - This plant is an ultrahighlander. It grows in very high elevations.

Temperature - Keeping the temperatures in the mid 80's with a night time drop into the 50's is needed.  Keeping the daytime temps out of the 90's is necessary, especially if this causes the humidity to significantly drop. Daytime temperatures should ideally be restricted to the mid 70's to mid 80s. If grown in a greenhouse, it should be placed next to the swamp cooler. This plant fails when grown as an intermediate for even a short period of time.

Humidity - The daytime humidity level should be kept above 70%. The nighttime humidity should be a saturated 100%. (Moisture should condense on the leaves.)

Light - I keep my plants in bright light to full sun (diffused).

Moisture - Keep the plant moist to wet. Do not let the soil dry out, as this can cause the roots to heat up. This plant is highly intolerant of a dry soil.

Soil - Long Fiber Sphagnum

Size - This plant will eventually become a nice scrambler, although tissue culture plants could take a couple years to grow to a significant size. It will grow well for a year or two in a cooled chamber. In a greenhouse, it should be grown near the swamp coolers.

Details: It resembles N. reinwardtiana and N. tentaculata, but can be larger than the latter. It may have began life as a hybrid of these plants, but has definitely developed into a new species with specific cultivating requirements which are much more strict than either parents.

Propagation -  I have not attempted to propagate this plant yet.

Forms - Only the typical form has been mentioned.
